In addition to my traditional tirade against calling today’s celebrations “4th of July” parties I added in that if we were truly interested in celebrating our independence and freedom then all businesses would be closed.

Imagine the belly laugh I had, then when I pulled into the Wienerschnitzel drive-thru on First St. and discovered the sign pictured above. Welcome toAmerica! Land of the free (after our shift is over).

Sonic is a fast food place that serves things like burgers, chili dogs, tater tots, popcorn chicken, grilled cheese, milkshakes, and flavored soda. They also have breakfast, which is served all day. This is the first Sonic in the Bay Area. My mom and I go to Sonic when we visit Las Vegas, and are happy we can now have it without driving to Nevada!

At Sonic you can either eat outside, go through a drive through, or a stall. There is no indoor space to sit. If you eat outside, you sit and the “waiters” on roller skates take your order. With the stalls, you park by a menu board. When your ready to order you push a button and order. A waiter on roller skates bring you your food and you can eat in your car or leave.

The Sonic here is by Walmart. Not in the shopping center, but if you don’t turn right at the light, you keep going until yo see a giant milkshake, you’ll find it. The address is 6921 Camino Arroyo. Expect a 20 to 45 min wait if you go because it is new and popular. See ya’ there!

We’re not sure if they’re new to breakfast or if they just put up a new sign, but they sure seem to know what they’re doing.

We arrived about 8:15 (they open at 8am) to find only one party dining. The old adage that “no one wants to eat in an empty restaurant” came to mind, but we pressed forward – and are glad we did. While perusing their menu of standard breakfast fare (eggs, pancakes, omelettes, scrambles, etc) the prices seemed a bit high to me, but if sitting under a wide screen TV showing some golf tournament wasn’t going to dissuade us from our traditional Saturday morning breakfast, then a couple extra bucks wasn’t either. We once again pushed forward.

Z ordered the banana pancakes (2) which come with walnuts & whip cream. She passed on the whip cream, but was pleasantly surprised to find the bananas were actually cooked in the pancakes and not just cut on top as they are at many places. I was surprised to see the size of these pancakes. They were 8-10 inches across and decently thick. Definitely some quality food and a hefty portion for their $5.95 price tag. Z also ordered a large glass of orange juice, though wasn’t as pleased with it as it was either watered down or a citrus blend of some sort as opposed to 100% real orange juice.

I decided to explore the Alvaro’s omelet – sausage, peppers, mushroom, monterey jack & swiss. It came with my choice of country potatoes or hash browns (I took the former) and toast. At $8.50 it seemed a bit pricey until it arrived and I saw this was a fully stuffed three egg omelet with a heaping portion of potatoes. Definitely looked worth the price tag at that point. The omelet was very good – nothing exceptional, but hearty and tasty.

The service was pleasant and the atmosphere low key, despite a dozen or so screens tuned to various sports channels even at the early hour. Overall, I’d compare breakfast at Stubby’s to a truck stop dining experience – large hearty portions at decent prices. It’s certainly not “fine dining”, but it was an excellent breakfast experience all the same. Z and I won’t be revisiting for lunch or dinner as we’re not sports fans or bar fans and Stubby’s can apparently get pretty rowdy during home team or contentious games, but it definitely made it on to our (slowly growing) list of breakfast options.
